Ailianos (Claudius Aelianus, ca. 165-225 AD) created an extensive work
on the Life of Animals. The author shows us what his contemporaries
found remarkable in animals: We meet mosquitoes and elephants as well as
lovesick fish and wondrous unicorns.
The work is also a "quarry" for quotes from ancient literature which is
lost otherwise. Above all, though, it is a treasure trove of animal
stories that not only appeal to a reading public interested in
antiquity, but also to animal lovers everywhere.
A new bilingual edition, for the first time based on the new 2009
Teubner text, has now been published by De Gruyter both in print and as
an ebook (which may well be included in your libraries' subscription
anyway).
