Diese Studie untersucht die Interessen, mit denen die Athener als 
Kultgemeinschaft ihre Stadtgöttin auf der Akropolis verehrten. Der 
zeitliche Rahmen wird vom Einsetzen von Votiven für die Göttin im frühen 
8. Jh. v. Chr. und der Fertigstellung ihres jüngsten Tempels am Ende des 
5. Jhs. v. Chr. Abgesteckt.Im Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen stehen die 
folgenden Bereiche:


I.Die Gestaltung des Heiligtums mit den acht Tempeln, die für Athena im 
Laufe von drei Jahrhunderten auf dem Plateau geplant bzw. gebaut wurden.

II.Die Bilder, die sich die Kultgemeinschaft von ihrer Göttin machte, 
besonders die Statuen in den Tempeln und die Promachos im Freien, neue 
Bildentwürfe und die Thematisierung der Göttin als Kultempfängerin.

III.Die Feste für Athena sowie die Erzählungen und bildlichen 
Darstellungen der beiden Urmythen Athens, die Erdgeburt des Ziehkindes 
der Athena und die Verteidigung Athens gegen Invasoren. Von beiden 
Mythen gibt es Versionen, die sich als Aktualisierungen erweisen.

In einem diachronen Kapitel werden die im Laufe der Jahrhunderte 
festzustellenden Veränderungen und Neuerungen als Folgen eines sich 
wandelnden Blickes auf die Göttin dargestellt.

This book investigates the interests behind the Athenians’ worship of 
their main goddess on the Acropolis as a cult community. It ranges 
chronologically from the appearance of votives for the goddess in the 
early 8th century B.C. to the completion of her latest temple at the end 
of the 5th century B.C. The study focuses on the following issues:

I.The formation of the sanctuary with the eight temples that were 
planned or built on the plateau over the course of three centuries.

II.The images that the cult community made of their goddess, especially 
the statues in the temples and the /Promachos/ outdoors, innovations in 
iconography, and depictions of the goddess as a cult recipient.

III.The festivals for Athena, and the tales and visual representations 
of both charter myths of Athens (the birth of Athena’s foster child from 
the earth and the defense of Athens against invaders). Both myths were 
retold in updated versions.

A diachronic chapter argues that the changes and innovations which can 
be observed in the course of the centuries are the consequences of a 
changing perspective on the goddess.
