 Stadt am Bosporos. Um 660 v. Chr. von Kolonisten aus Megara besiedelt und nach Byzas, dem ersten Herrscher, Byzantion benannt, ist ihr Aufstieg zu Ansehen und Macht von lokalen Legenden umrankt. Mit der Eroberung durch Septimius Severus leitet der Exkurs des
 Hesychios aus ihrer mythischen Vergangenheit hinüber in die historisch-römische Realität. Hier knüpft der unbekannte mittelalterliche Patriograph an und entfaltet nach einfallsreichen Zwischenepisoden einen enkomiastischen Bericht über die Neugründung der
 Stadt als Konstantinopel. Alle Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich nun auf Konstantin den Grossen, auf dessen Bautätigkeit und Machtentfaltung im Neuen Rom.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

 Gemeinsam beschließen sie, für ihren Glauben zu sterben. Nichts und niemand wird sie aufhalten. Die Märtyrerakte, die ihre Geschichte erzählt, ist ein besonderes Dokument, vor allem wegen des eingefügten autobiografischen Teils, der noch von Perpetua selbst
 verfasst wurde. Der Text bietet daher die einmalige Gelegenheit, etwas von dem frühchristlichen Feuer des Glaubens ganz unmittelbar zu sehen und in die Gedanken einer jungen Christin einzudringen. Darüber hinaus vermittelt der Text ein bewegendes Bild von
 der Hinrichtung der Märtyrerinnen und ihrer männlichen Begleiter.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
